Computing Science Series Update

The Scottish Government, working in partnership with key organisations including STACS, ADES, COSLA, Education Scotland, the EIS and headteacher groups, has led a strategic programme of work focused on the future of Computing Science in Scotland.

This work built directly on the foundational engagement STACS carried out last year with local authorities and aimed to gather evidence on the current state of Computing Science learning and teaching, to help inform future policy and strengthen provision for all learners.

Areas of focus

The Computing Science meeting series explored a number of key themes, including:

  • Recruitment and retention

  • Professional learning

  • School infrastructure

  • Subject attractiveness

  • Other emerging issues raised by participants

Teachers shared honest experiences, challenges and examples of good practice. All contributions shared through STACS were fully anonymised and fed into the national discussions.

What happens next?

The meeting series has now concluded, and the Scottish Government is preparing a report. This report will bring together the evidence gathered and be shared with stakeholders.

Your voice still matters

Although the formal meeting series has ended, teacher voice remains central to STACS.

STACS will continue to:

  • Gather and amplify concerns and challenges raised by teachers

  • Reflect these issues in our annual reports

  • Share evidence with relevant partners and the Scottish Government

  • Advocate on behalf of teachers delivering Computing Science across Scotland

We welcome you to continue sharing your experiences — particularly where challenges persist or new issues emerge. You can also contact us on connected.stacs.scot or email support@stacs.scot
